Social media image sizes are a pain in the butt. Nothing screams “I don’t know what I’m doing!!” like a pixelated photo or awkwardly cropped video. But knowing exactly what size to use for every post? That’s where things get confusing — and fast!

So we’ve simplified it! Below you’ll find the most current social media image sizes and video dimensions you need to create content that looks clean and scroll-stopping. No fluff. No guessing. Just the sizes that matter for:

Facebook

Instagram

YouTube

Google Business Profile

AND… we also provided a little cheat-sheet chart at the end so you can quickly grab the social media image sizes that you need. Bookmark this blog for future reference — we’ll keep it updated if things change!

Facebook Image Sizes

Profile Picture

This sizing can be used for both personal profile pictures and business page profile pictures.

  • Upload at 2048 x 2048 px (1:1 ratio)
  • Displays at 176 x 176 px on desktop and 196 x 196 px on mobile
  • Keep your logo or face centered — it shows up as a circle.
  • Pro Tip: Since most people are browsing their socials on a phone, avoid using logos that have fine or small print as a profile picture. Use your lovely headshot or an easily recognizable logo mark instead!

Cover Photo (Personal Profile)
  • Recommended: 851 x 315 px (minimum size), but aim for 2037 x 745 px for higher resolution
  • On desktop, the bottom left portion of the cover is partially covered by:
    • Your profile picture
    • Your name
    • Buttons like “Add Friend” or “Message”
  • On mobile, the crop shifts — so avoid placing anything crucial like words or contact information in the bottom corners. Keep that info front and center!

Cover Photo (Business Page)

Is it confusing that the social media image size for a business page is different than a personal profile? Sure ’nuff is. But that’s social media for ya!

  • Recommended: 1958 x 745 px (2.63:1 ratio)
  • Safe zone for text/images: Centered middle section

Newsfeed Image Posts

Facebook likes lot of different image sizes! So you’re not limited to just using one. Here are the 3 image sizes that will show up nicely on the newsfeed — without awkward gaps at the side or tops. (Honestly though, this is not the sizing I would stress about! Post what you want. Don’t worry about this!)

  • Square: 1080 x 1080 px (1:1)
  • Portrait: 1080 x 1350 px (4:5)
  • Landscape: 1080 x 566 px (1.91:1)

Link Preview Images
  • 1200 x 628 px (1.91:1) – Ideal for blog links and offers

Not so quick note on link preview images: When you share a link on Facebook — like a blog post, lesson info, or your homepage — Facebook doesn’t just magically know which image to use. It pulls that info from something called Open Graph tags, which tell platforms what image, title, and description to show.

If you don’t set these up, Facebook will grab whatever it can find — which might be your logo, a random image from the page, or nothing at all. To control this, make sure each page on your website has a featured image and proper meta settings.

If you’re using Squarespace, you can edit this by going to Page Settings → Social Image and uploading your preferred graphic. After that, head to Facebook’s Sharing Debugger to preview the link and click “Scrape Again” if needed. This refreshes Facebook’s cache so your post shows up with the right image and info — clean, professional, and on-brand.

Facebook Link Post Image 1200 x 628
Video Sizes
  • Reels/Stories: 1080 x 1920 px (9:16)
  • Standard Video Post: 1280 x 720 px (16:9)
Facebook Reels (1080 x 1920)
Facebook Standard Video Size 1280 x 720

👉 Pro Tip: Facebook is leaning hard into vertical video — if you’re sharing Reels, aim for 1080 x 1920 px. It fills the mobile screen and feels more native to how people are scrolling. Plus, it plays well with content you may already be creating for Instagram or YouTube Shorts!

Carousel Images

A carousel is a swipeable post format that lets you share multiple images or videos in a single post. Viewers can swipe (on mobile) or click arrows (on desktop) to move through the slides. These are great for storytelling or tutorials — and they tend to get higher engagement because people spend more time interacting with them!

  • 1080 x 1350 px (4:5) – Each card should be consistent in size so that when you scroll through the carousels, it feels continuous.

Instagram Image Sizes

Profile Picture
  • Upload at 320 x 320 px
  • Keep your logo or face centered — it shows up as a circle.
Instagram Profile Picture (320 x 320)
Feed Posts
  • Square: 1080 x 1080 px
  • Portrait: 1080 x 1350 px (4:5) – Performs best for engagement
  • Landscape: 1080 x 566 px (1.91:1)
Instagram Portrait 1080 x 1350
Instagram Landscape 1080 x 1350

👉 Pro Tip: Instagram’s algorithm now favors vertical content (especially on mobile), so portrait posts take up more screen space in the feed — meaning more visibility and potentially more engagement. Square posts still work, but if you’re creating new graphics or using Canva, go with 1080 x 1350 px for the win.

Stories & Reels

Lucky for us: Instagram stories and reels are the exact same size! Huzzah!

  • 1080 x 1920 px (9:16) – Vertical full-screen content
Instagram Reel 1080 x 1920
Carousels

Make your life easier and use the SAME size (4:5) for carousels on both Facebook and Instagram. Even better… use Meta Business Suite to upload them to both at the same time!

  • Match the same sizes as feed posts – ideally 1080 x 1350 (portrait)  or 1080 x 1080 (square)
Instagram Carousel Post (1080 x 1350 px)

YouTube Image Sizes

Profile Picture
  • 800 x 800 px
  • Keep your logo or face centered — it shows up as a circle
YouTube Profile Picture (800 x 800)
Channel Banner
  • 2560 x 1440 px
  • Safe area for text/logos: 1546 x 423 px (center zone that shows across all devices)
Youtube Channel Banner 2560 x 1440 social media image size
Video Uploads
  • 1920 x 1080 px (16:9) – Standard HD resolution
YouTube Video 1920 x 1080 social media image size
YouTube Shorts

YEP — these are the same exact size as Facebook reels and Instagram reels, so you can easily upload the same content to YouTube. (Though the video length is not the same, but that’s a topic for another post!)

  • 1080 x 1920 px (9:16) – Mobile-first vertical format
Youtube Shorts 1080 x 1920 social media image size

Google Business Profile Image Sizes

Profile/Logo
  • 720 x 720 px (1:1 ratio)
  • Keep your logo or face centered — it shows up as a circle
Google Business Profile Logo (720 x 720)
Cover Photo
  • 1024 x 576 px recommended (16:9)
Google Business Profile Cover Photo 1024 x 576
Post Images (Updates)
  • 1200 x 900 px (4:3 ratio) – Ideal for news, promos, events
Google Business Profile Updates 1200 x 900
Videos
  • Minimum: 720p resolution (1280 x 720 px)
  • Formats: .mp4, .mov, up to 75MB
